When you say United Healthcare raked in $16 billion, is that profits or gross income?

Depends on the source and how we interpret the figures. According to Forbes, UnitedHealthcare Group’s full-year revenue grew 13% to$281.4 billion in 2023. Yahoo Finance claims that UnitedHealthcare Group’s 2023 revenues grew $47.5 billion or 14.6% year-over-year to $371.6 billion. The insurance industry does not manufacture or sell any physical item, it gambles on risk. If nobody becomes ill and files a claim, then all revenues minus operating expenses constitute profit. But the issue is not a company’s right and duty to its shareholders to turn a profit or at least break even. The issue is UnitedHealthcare Group’s program to dodge legitimate claims and thereby enhance their own bottom line. Undeserved rewards and obscene wealth building amongst top management only adds insult to injury in the mind of a public that feels it’s being fleeced.
